A gold filled finish is a layer of pure gold, pressure-bonded to brass base metal. Gold filled is not to be confused with gold plated or vermeil, as gold filled items are up to 10 times thicker than gold plated styles. Gold filled is both very valuable and tarnish resistant, meaning the colour will not fade.
